제목 Perfluorocyclobutane Based Polymers for Fiber-optic Communications
초록 We have investigated possibilities for developing new fluorinated polymers as potential low loss POF materials. Quantum chemical calculation for the design of optimum molecular structure revealed that partially fluorinated aromatic structures at appropriate positions can lead to a dramatic decrease of vibrational intensity of the remaining C-H bonds. Thus it is expected that the resulting vibrational intensities of overtone bands of C-H will also be decreased resulting in substantially low optical loss. For example, three substitution of the fluorine atoms on the aromatic ring structure is expected to lead to a decrease of the vibrational intensities upto 5 % of the original intensities instead of 50 %. Based on this theoretical principle we designed and synthesized new perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) ring containing polymer structures. Polymers showed good thermal stability. The preforms for the fiber were prepared by thermal bulk polymerization. The optical fiber was spun from preform and the optical loss was investigated. The optical loss was strongly dependent on the polymer preform preparation conditions such as temperature, purity and the degassed state of the monomers. It was also dependent on the composition of the fiber. Homopolymeried naphthalene based polymers showed typical attenuation of about 20,000 dB/km at 1550 nm and typical low loss windows were found at 815, 920 and 1030 nm with attenuation values of about 9000 dB/km. Copolymers with higher fluorine contents could reduce these optical losses of the fibers. Further continued efforts for optimization of the polymerization conditions would be expected to lead to much higher transparency of these new fluorinated polymers.
