제목 Effect of Packing Competition between Sulfone Group and Alkyl Chain of Side Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymers on the Layered Structures
초록 A structure-directing role for packing competition between sulfone group and alkyl chain is reported in a series of side chain LCPs, poly[oxy(n-alkylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene] (nSEO, n = 14, 16, and 18), where flexible PEO backbone were chemically grafted with SO2(CH2)nH side groups. For the 14SEO with a relatively short alkyl chains, the bulky sulfone groups truly dominates the nanostructure at solid and mesophase, yielding a planar layer structure. However, in the presence of long alkyl chains for the both 16SEO and 18SEO, the outer segments of alkyl chains can overcome spatial constraints imposed by bulky sulfone group, possibly interacting with other alkyl chains, which in turn gives rise to a tight chain packing, as evidenced by the WAXS, 13C NMR and FT-IR measurements. Therefore, a rippled suprastructure found in the both 16SEO and 18SEO is believed to be due to the packing frustration between bulky sulfone groups and alkyl chains, consisting of two immiscible phases.
