제목 Polydispersity Stabilized Complex Morphologies in Diblock Copolymers
초록 Block copolymers have the unique property to self-assemble into ordered microstructures with well-defined periodicity. Among the various attainable microdomain morphologies, complex bicontinuous morphologies are highly desirable due to their inherent structural connectivity. In this study, we synthesized and characterized a series of polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-PMMA) diblocks where polydispersity index (PDI) of both blocks were varied. The PS-PMMA diblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PDI of the first block was controlled by temporal regulation of initiator feed rate, while the second block PDI was controlled by the addition of phenylhydrazine modifier. At fixed volume fraction of the PS block, PDI dictated phase transition was observed. In particular, in the case where PDI of both blocks were high, the polymers were found to exhibit perforated lamellae and disordered bicontinuous morphologies.
