제목 An adsorption of elemental mercury on sulfur functionalized carbonaceous materials
초록 The present study has been focused on the adsorption of elemental mercury on sulfur functionalized porous carbons. These mercury adsorptions depended greatly on the adsorption temperature, the sulfur functionalization, and the surface modification before sulfur impregnation at chosen conditions. At 25oC, a bare carbon showed a much higher mercury uptake than that on sulfur-rich carbons, indicating that many different types of surface functional groups in the carbon can interact with elemental mercury. At a higher temperature of 135oC, the extent of mercury adsorption was dramatically reduced but the sulfur functionalization could facilitate the affinity to mercury in a wide range of adsorption energy. The oxygen-containing groups gave a strong influence on the sulfur functionalization; thus, prior to this surface modification, conditions for a thermal pretreatment of the original carbon played a key role in determining the adsorption of elemental mercury. This could be weakly adsorbed on sulfur atoms interacting with the surface carbon groups with strong basicity.
