Ionic Liquid-Based Composite Membrane for PEMFCs Operating under Low Relative Humidity Conditions
Nafion membrane, Nafion with 50% loading of the ionic liquid diethylmethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate [Dema][TfO] (Nafion/[Dema][TfO]-50), and Nafion with 75% loading of [Dema][TfO] reinforced with a porous Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane (PTFE/Nafion/[Dema][TfO]-75) were evaluated and compared for use in a proton exchange membrane fuel cells under low relative humidity conditions. The presence of [Dema][TfO] in the composite membrane was confirmed by FTIR. Water uptake and swelling of the membranes were measured and compared at 60 degrees C. The polarization curves clearly indicate that the novel PTFE/Nafion/[Dema][TfO]-75 composite membrane results in significantly improved fuel cell performance under low humidity conditions compared to the pure Nafion membrane.
