Effect of Polyhydroxy-Alcohol on the Electrochemical Behavior of the Positive Electrolyte for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries
Glycerin and n-propyl alcohol have been investigated as electrolyte additives for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). The effects of these additives on the electrochemical performances of VRBF positive electrolyte were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. The results show an improved electrochemical performance upon the addition of glycerin. This is attributed to more effective adsorption of vanadium ions at the electrode surface, which, in turn, is due to the increased activity of the hydroxyl groups in the electrolyte.
