Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia and coproduction of metal Sulfides from hydrogen sulfide and nitrogen under atmospheric pressure
It was confirmed that ammonia was synthesized by introducing hydrogen sulfide into LiCl-KCl-CsCl-Li3N (0.5 mol % Li3N added! melt at 573 K according to the reaction, 3/2 H2S + N3- → NH3 + 3/2 S2-. After the introduction of hydrogen sulfide gas, an anodic potentiostatic electrolysis was conducted at 2.0 V (vs. Li+/Li) using a nickel working electrode and a nitrogen gas counter electrode. It was confirmed that nickel sulfides, NiS and NiS2, were formed on the anode, and that nitrogen gas was reduced to nitride ions at the cathode. The obtained results confirmed the feasibility of the electrolytic synthesis of ammonia with coproduction of metal sulfides from hydrogen sulfide and nitrogen gases under atmospheric pressure. © 2005 The Electrochemical Society.
