Zinc Surfactant Effects on the Processability and Mechanical Properties of Silica Filled Natural Rubber Compounds
E-mail:
Zinc ion-containing surfactants, ZB47 and ZL, were added into TESPT [bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide]/silica and TESPD [bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)disulfide]/silica and their effects on natural rubber(NR) compounds were investigated based on processability, rheology, and mechanical properties. The zinc surfactants improved the processabilities and viscosity, i.e., they lowered the heat generation during mixing, lowered the ODR minimum torque, and lowered the Mooney viscosity. The additon of the zinc surfactants (S4/ZB47, S2/ZB47) reduced the cure time, improved the torque between the maximum and minimum, increased the reversion time, and lowered the tanδ values, all of which lead to improvements in the mechanical properties, such as tensile modulus and blowout (BO) time. The moduli of the long-time-cured specimens were lower than those of the regularly cured ones, but when the zinc surfactants were added into the compounds, the ones that were over-cured showed higher modulus than did the regularly cured ones. The most significant improvement was found from the BO time experiment after the addition of the zinc surfactants. The ZB47-added compounds (S4/ZB47, S2/ZB47) exhibited lower heat generations, lower Mooney viscosities, and longer blowout (BO) times than did the ZL-added compounds(S4/ZL, S2/ZL).
