Highly selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate over Tin(IV) sulfide monolayers
The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to fuels or valuable chemicals is an attractive method for satisfying the requirements of renewable energy storage and the artificial carbon cycle. In this study, SnS2 mono layers were applied as a robust catalyst for the electroreduction of CO2, enabling the efficient production of HCCO- with a high faradaic efficiency of 94 +/- 5% and excellent long-term durability (over 80 h). Theoretical studies revealed that the atomic-scale thickness facilitates the hydrogenation of CO2 to key HCOO* intermediates and the subsequent proton-electron transfer, leading to superior electrocatalytic performance for the production of formate from CO2.
