Wide range phosphorescent iridium complexes chelated with 2-naphtyl-thienopyridyl ligands
Photophysical luminescent and electrochemical properties of the phosphorescent iridium complexes chelated with 2-naphtylthienopyridyl (2-NTP) ligands were investigated. The use of highly conjugated 2-NTP as an ancillary ligand of the iridium complexes is expected to show bathochromic shift in phosphorescence and lead to wide emission range in wavelength. Thus, we introduced 4-(2-Naphthyl)thieno[3,2-c]pyridine (2-NTP) to the iridium center along with 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) and 2-phenylquinoline (pq) as main ligands. The resulting iridium complexes, (2-NTP)Ir(ppy)(2) and (2-NTP)Ir(pq)(2), exhibited the photoluminescence at 531 and 611nm, respectively. They also showed rather large full width at half maximum (FWHM) over 100nm, covering wide wavelength range. For the application to white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), such wide range phosphorescent iridium complexes are promising candidates as emitting materials.
