Formate Ionic Liquids Playing the Roles of Reducer and Stabilizer for the Synthesis of Noble Metal Nanoparticles
Gold and silver nanoparticles were synthesized by the reduction of the corresponding metal ions using ionic liquids with formate anion and phosphonium cation. The ionic liquids served as a solvent, a reducing reagent, and a stabilizer preventing the coalescence of nanoparticles. The reducing ability of anion and the stabilizing ability of cation were controlled by the alkyl-chain lengths of cation and the contents of water and 2-propanol dissolved in ILs. By using trioctyl(hexadecyl)phosphonium formate, size regulated gold and silver nanoparticles have been synthesized.
