Arginine Suppresses the Adsorption of Lysozyme onto Single-wall Carbon Nanotubes
Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are applied in biotechnological applications, such as biosensors. However, their intrinsic physical properties are impaired by the nonspecific adsorption of proteins onto SWCNT surfaces. Thus, it is necessary to prevent such protein adsorption to maintain the unique functions of SWCNTs. In this study, we demonstrated that arginine reduced the adsorption of hen egg white lysozyme onto SWCNTs. The effect of arginine can be ascribed to an inhibition of the interactions between the aromatic amino acid residues of lysozyme and SWCNTs. Arginine thus helps retain the potential of SWCNTs in their biotechnological applications.
