Estimation Method for Intrinsic Drying Rate of Fick-Type Coating
Coating is composed of a base plate and a coated layer on it. In this study, we examined whether the drying rate of the coated layer alone, named "the intrinsic drying rate of coating," may be a standard drying rate of coating. Since a precise value of the intrinsic drying rate cannot be obtained from drying experiments, a series of computer simulations was performed for a binary Fick-type coating of polyvinylacetate-toluene, and the drying rate curves of the coated base plate and the intrinsic drying rate curves were obtained. As a result, each intrinsic rate curve showed a larger value than that of corresponding rate curve with base plate, and the difference was remarkably larger than that of the polyvinylalcohol-water system. Next, each intrinsic rate curve was estimated by the previous estimation method and the corresponding simulated rate curve with base plate. The method is a mutual estimation one for coating drying rate between base plates with different heat capacity. The estimated result showed a good agreement with the simulated one, but the degree of agreement was inferior to that of the polyvinylalcohol-water system.
