Texture transformation in circular domain of polar smectic films: Chiral elasticity induced by coupling of flexoelectric and spontaneous polarizations
Both pure tangential and radial textures in circular domains of polar SmC* LCs are shown to be solutions satisfying the equations for bulk- and boundary-orientation, and for domain shape derived via the Frank free energy, with pure tangential and normal line tensions. The stability of both textures is studied in terms of the elastic anisotropy. Results show that, at a critical domain diameter, both textures switch to reversing spiral textures. By considering the chiral elasticity contributed by the coupling of flexoelectric and spontaneous polarizations the existence of an inverse relation of the critical radius and the spontaneous polarization is revealed.
