Process improvement for investment casting of SiCp/AZ91D magnesium composite
The main emphasis is to develop a complete production line in molten state for particle reinforced magnesium composites - preparing composite slurry in the molten state by Rotation-Cylinder method (RCM) and then pouring the resultant composite slurry into a suitable mould by investment casting. In this paper, the optimum conditions of RCM and the feasibility to use conventional colloidal silica bonded alumina mold materials are discussed, with an emphasis to the process improvements in investment casting of SiCp/AZ91D magnesium composites. This paper shows a strong potential for being able to produce castable light wear resistant SiCp/AZ91D magnesium composite products for close to 2.4 $ per kg.
