Industrial applications of superplastic forming technology in China
The superplasticity of materials and related technology have been studied from 1970's in China. More than 50 organizations have been involved in this field and the investigation and the manufacturing center of superplastic forming and diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) technology has been set up. The present paper reviews the industrial application status of SPF/DB technology in China. More and more materials are developed to exhibit superplasticity in recent years. Some titanium alloys and aluminum alloys have been widely utilized in forming various structural components with complex shapes by SPF/DB technology. More attentions are paid to light-weight and high-temperature materials recently. Single sheet components of Ti3Al based alloys have been put into use in aerospace and the curve panel with 3-sheets sandwich structure of a Ti3Al intermetallic has been manufactured successfully by SPF/DB technology. The superplastic characteristics of TiAl, Fe3Al intermetallics, metal matrix composites and ceramics et al have been studied on a laboratory scale and there is a long way to go to reach the level of industrial application. With the development of industrial SPF/DB technology, more and more SPF/DB components are manufactured and applied in military and civil industries. The sizes of components produced by the technology become bigger and bigger, and the shapes of components become more complex. At the same time, the components exhibit excellent reliability.
