Measuring the state of cure of elastomers by using an ultrasonic technique
Speed of sound and attenuation coefficient in thin sheets of elastomers are measured by using an ultrasonic technique. The main scope of the investigations is to characterize the state of cure. In samples made of NBR, NR and EPDM the state of cure is clearly identified using the ultrasonic technique. Even if samples incorporate a reinforcing fabric layer, the state of cure can be characterized. The experiments are conducted in a wide temperature and frequency range. Complex mechanical moduli and dynamic loss factors are derived from speed of sound and attenuation coefficient. Due to an increasing state of cure, higher values of the dynamic glass transition temperature are observed.
