Photoelectrochemical catalysis of the oxidation of organic molecules by oxygen on small semiconductor particles with TiO2 as an example

Abstract

The kinetics of the photocatalytic oxidation of organic molecules at TiO2 particles are analyzed with the aim of determining the conditions required to obtain high quantum yields. With the assumption that holes react at the interface faster than electrons, the particles contain, in the steady state, an excess of electrons under illumination. It is shown that the rate of electron capture by oxygen is a decisive parameter for the yield. It also transpires that only very small particles can reach a high yield.

Additionally, the pioneering contributions of Gerischer (1969a, b, 1966) allowed linking the anodic or cathodic current at semiconductor electrodes with the availability of excess of holes in the valence band or excess of electrons in the conduction band, respectively. Gerischer introduced the concepts of minority charge carriers and density of states with the concomitant development of an extensive theory related to the physical and chemical processes that concur at the semiconductor–electrolyte interface (Gerischer, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995; Memming, 2015; Sato, 1998; Morrison, 1980). The theoretical treatment reported by Bockris and Uosaki (1978, 1977), indicated that the energy state of the surface is the determining factor in the efficiency of the water splitting, as well as energy conversion.

In competition with these photodegradative chemical processes, concurrent charge recombination and hydroxyl radical quenching to hydroxide anions takes place (e.g. by photogenerated electrons) [89,90]. Adsorbed molecular oxygen also contributes to the overall photodegradation quantum yields [91]. This encompasses electron-hole pairs generated following the onset of UV illumination either undergoing recombination within the bulk, or electrons being trapped by defects and adsorbed surface species (such as molecular oxygen) [92–94].
