Abstract

Surface characterizations of thin film coating of random poly(N-vinylcarbazole-co-vinylbenzenesulfonic acid), P[NVCz-co-VBSA] copolymer on carbon fiber was performed. Coatings of polymer thin films obtained, with different current densities, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infra red attenuated transform reflectometry (FT-IR–ATR). The characterization of the thin polymer films was performed on the surface of the carbon fiber, and composition of copolymeric structure was proposed.

Activated carbon is often used as electrode material due to a controlled distribution of pores determining the electrode/electrolyte interface for electrochemical applications [5]. The interfacial interaction between carbon surface and polymer coating layer is crucial for the controlled design of the morphology of the growing layer [6]. The capacitance of conjugated polymers may substantially be described as redox (pseudo) capacitance associated with Faradaic redox processes and coupled with a double layer capacitance.
